The main character of the movie is a woman who has to be taken care of by her husband and in his absence, her son. With the death of the father, paternal authority functions within the home in the form of the son. The protection extended to the mother by the son working abroad evolves into a surveillance on the life of the single woman. The conflict in the film is also the power struggle between the mother and the son. The struggle against authority leads the middle-class woman to realizations about life.
